In the 2000s, I reckon the book adds a simple introductory two-page spread to make it more accessible to a new reader -- who were they, what happened, where are they now. Below these four panels would go a fifth panel, establishing the current status quo, which might be "Home at last," a panel of them on Noxalia, or "In trouble," if we're following up on a cliffhanger.
A point of reference here is the four-panel origin story of Superman, from All-Star Superman.

Avi here in the first panel is seen a few years before the first strip, real green, drawn somewhat androgynously, because I reckon she's out as a trans man at this point, and "used to be a girl" is something you'd want to de-emphasise. Earlier versions of this spread might have read "Girl reporter."
